About the show...
According to the Pew Research Center, 20 million kids between the ages of 12 and 17 use the Internet, almost 87% of all U.S.The Internet Generation: teens. Of those, 60% say they have been contacted online by a stranger. 15% admit lying about their age to gain access to an adult web site (including one out of five boys surveyed). Almost half (45%) of teens have used the Internet to post or send personal photos. In addition, new research shows the Internet is a growing gathering place for "marginalized" teens engaged in self-injury and other harmful practices. In these online communities, such behavior is often normalized. There is no doubt that the Internet can be a useful tool for research and education. But it can also be frightening for parents whose teenagers spend hours online each day. Experts say it is up to parents to help keep kids safe by establishing and enforcing rules about online usage in The Internet Generation.

·        Erica was bullied so severely in middle school that her parents decided to home-school her. But, the bullies used the Internet to continue harassing Erica in her own home through instant messaging, chat rooms and email.

·        14-year-old Hillary used the Internet to research a paper on eating disorders, but stumbled upon "pro-anorexia" websites that promote anorexia nervosa as an alternative lifestyle. She says those websites were a factor in an eating disorder so serious Hillary had to be hospitalized.

·        Kelsey, age 16, thought she had met the perfect boy online, but "he" was actually a 26-year-old woman, pretending to be a 17-year-old male. Their relationship continued for months, even after Kelsey found out the truth.

·        Chelsea, age 16, was raped by a man she met on the Internet. Chelsea became depressed and committed suicide. Her 22-year-old Internet predator is serving ten years in prison.
