Our September spotlight is Jahir C. Avila, a 1997 Galena Park High School graduate. He also attended Galena Park Elementary and Galena Park Middle School.  Avila attributes his academic success to Mrs. Lopez, Mrs. Craven, Mr. Boardstreet, Mr. Matthews and Mr. Tremel. They taught him the importance of communicating and helping others. He would also like to thank all of his former teachers for their hard work and dedication.

During his senior year, Avila enlisted to join the United States Army after graduation. While in the Army, he worked in the Infantry. Throughout his 20 year service in the Army, he has been all over the world including the Middle East and Europe.  Avila went overseas during war four separate occasions to serve our country.

Mr. Avila is getting ready to begin a new chapter in his life in his hometown of Galena Park. He will be retiring from the Army at the end of the month with 20 years of experience. After retirement, he would like to continue helping others by working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assisting after natural disasters.

GPISD would like to thank Mr. Avila for his service to our country and congratulate him on his retirement from the Army.
