GALENA PARK ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESPONDS TO TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES – OFFERS SUPPLEMENTAL PAY FOR ALL EMPLOYEES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Houston, TX – On June 11, 2012, the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees approved a one-time $650 net retention supplement for all employees.

In an effort to offset the rising costs of fuel, health insurance and cost of living expenses, along with remaining competitive in employee recruitment and retention, the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees approved a one-time net monetary supplement of $650 for all qualified employees.

Public education has been faced with a funding crisis for several years. This has resulted in school districts throughout Texas freezing salaries, cutting positions, and even laying people off. “With what’s going on in our economy, we’re one of the last districts still giving any kind of extra money. Not only are we able to give these supplements, we are not handing out pink slips. This is a testament to GPISD’s excellent leadership and planning,” commented Joe Stephens, Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees President.

Galena Park ISD has not laid off one employee due to the state funding issues.

A one-time lump sum payment is a one-time expense and does not create an ongoing recurring obligation. Nevertheless, while GPISD wants to reward its staff with higher salaries, GPISD also needs to remain fiscally responsible.

“We are all feeling the effects of a tough economy. Unfortunately, this may barely cover the cost of health care, but it is something. But we are committed to our teachers and staff. We all know they are worth much more,” said Stephens. “Hopefully in the future, when the economy eases up and we see new leadership in Austin, we will be able to do more, because they certainly deserve it,” he added.

Galena Park ISD is hopeful there will be changes in the manner in which public schools are funded. Regardless, GPISD is committed to maintaining quality education for all of its students.
