Walk to School Day

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Throughout our community, many students walk to school every day. In an effort to promote safety and healthy living, Raquel Gonzalez, MacArthur Elementary nurse, organized “Walk to School Day,” held on Friday, October 26. MacArthur Elementary School parents were encouraged to walk their child to school while discussing safety procedures. Parents and students were also reminded of the health benefits offered by walking to school. “In a society where video games and TV have become the normal routines for our students, getting them out to walk to school helps promote healthy living,” said Gonzalez. However, Walk to School Day encompassed even more than safety and exercise. “It gave parents and students the opportunity to share a morning together without the morning rush.” Gonzalez explained. “Students had a fun walking experience with their parents, and parents enjoyed the camaraderie of it, while [our] staff enjoyed the community participation.”
