North Shore Elementary Voluteer Receives Heroes for Children Award
Houston, Texas: Fifteen school volunteers were recognized on Friday, September 16 by the State Board of Education for their volunteer services and contributions to Texas Public Schools.
Mr. Alfred Youens, North Shore Elementary volunteer, was a recipient of the 2016 Heroes for Children award. For the past 8 years, Mr. Yoens dedicated his time to helping first graders learn to read.
For the past year and a half, Mr. Youens had been battle cancer but he never let it get in the way of going to NSE on Mondays and Wednesdays to help students. The only time he would miss is if he would have to go into treatment. He always put students first and diligently worked to make a positive impact in their lives.
Unfortunately Mr. Youens lost his battle to cancer a few months ago. Three days before he passed away, he received a letter from the SBOE announcing that he was a recipient of the Heroes for Children award.
His wife, Carol Youens, and their daughter, Sheryl, accepted his award in Austin on his behalf. Also in attendance were Mrs. Perez, NSE principal, Ms. Carmela Garcia, NSE counselor, and Mrs. Mathews, program director for grants and community relations, to show their admiration, love and support.
NSE and Galena Park ISD are so blessed to have been part of his life. Mr. Youens' spirit and legacy will live on at NSE for many years to come.
